    Angry Dirt ate my alternator

I need some ideas for keeping dirt out of my alternator. At the Junkathon it got in under the front of the hood so I put some fine screen in the gap. At the Mutha when my bumper got almost ripped off it took the top of the radiator support down about six inches and the dirt did it again. That left me with a dead battery again and had to push the car on the trailer again. Please

Wink Theres Dirt in the Hood..............

Cut about a 3 or 4' piece from a roll of plastic door screen and suspend it between your hood pins about 6 to 12" on top and before the end of your hood..........................
Attach a few wheel weighs to the bottom of the screen(part that hangs over your bumper/grill area) to keep it from blowing over the hood...........

    Dirty Alt

Every one is missing the obvious answer. Leave the alternator at home.
2nd on RP Screw Plastic window screen to hood. Hang down as low as needed.
I secure with a bungee cord across car over screen.

The only problem with leaving the alternator at home is that I have an electric fan and I can't run without it. Trust me, I thought about it.

I was going to do that on my tempo but the same belt runs the power steering and didn't want to be without that, or spend the time to find a belt that was short enough to only reach the ps and not the alt.

Buy an alternator from autozone...then bring it back under warranty after every race

might want to go to a different autozone each time...or atleast a different person at the counter. 8 times in one year might look suspisous

I already took one back but I feel guilty doing it so I might just stock up at the junk yard. Come to think of it though, I got pretty mediocre service the last time I went to Auto Zone so I might give it a shot.

I'm doing both Critter. I'm going to run the 87 Cavalier at Wall Sunday, and then fix it up for next year. I just bought a 98 Cavalier that I haven't started on yet so there will be two Orange 47's but not in the same race. I plan to use all the good advice I've gotten from all you racers to make the safest car possible and have a lot of fun. When I get the new one done, I'll go back and make some changes to the old one.

When I ran the 4 cyl at Bridgeport i did not run an alt. But I kept recharging the battery after each race, run two batteries, mount one inside the car and one in the orignal position, run ur fan off one and the rest of the car off the other...dont forget the switch to kill the fan or it will keep running...
