Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem has had a rough winter, but he’s hoping that he can bring a smile to the faces of his crew members on Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium.
A few short weeks ago, Lee lost his father – longtime racer and former Stadium champion Robert Jeffreys. “Riding home from the race track and stuff like that – it’s rough. But we’ll get through,” said Lee about missing his father.
But Jeffreys drove a strong qualifying lap in Friday night qualifying sessions for the Hayes Jewelers 200. He was the second fastest competitor in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series and will start on the outside front row.
He’ll have his work cut out for him, however. Starting right next to him on the pole will be the fastest qualifier and last year’s defending champ, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. Myers turned a blistering lap of 13.037 seconds, a feat he hopes to parlay into a win in the
Hayes Jewelers 200.
“I don’t care how good you are or how long you’ve been doing this – one lap qualifying is as tough a thing as I’ve ever had to do in racing,” said Myers. Now with 200 laps ahead of him, Myers is ready to get to work. “You’ve got to pace yourself. You’ve got to be able to
have a car that will run for a long distance,” said Myers. “In my opinion, starting on the pole is about the safest place you can be.”
Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem and Tim Brown of Tobaccoville will start third and fourth. The top ten qualifiers from Friday night will be locked in, and other competitors have the option of requalifying on Saturday night. The starting lineup will be decided strictly based
off of qualifying times.
With the double-file restart rule and 200 laps, there will be plenty of opportunities for those who didn’t qualify well tonight to make up position. And of course there will be plenty of trials where the top cars have to defend their turf.
John Holleman of Winston-Salem was the fastest qualifier for the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series with a time of 14.729. With the field of cars being now set, the Sportsman cars will redraw for starting position Saturday night.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, the second round of qualifying begins at 7:10, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM on Saturday night, April 22. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-
