It takes racing talent to do well in the points standings at Bowman Gray Stadium. It takes a strong car. It takes a devoted crew and supportive sponsors.
But it also takes a little luck.
On Saturday night, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove declined to start in the rear in the Fans’ Challenge and instead decided to try his luck randomly drawing for position. He ended up with a sixth place start and was able to make his
way strategically to the lead.
And he’s held on to the points lead throughout the entire season with consistent finishes and by avoiding any involvement in crashes and wrecks. “You’ve got to be a little bit lucky, but on the other side of things we had a
great race car,” said Burt Myers, who went on to take the win. “Just right place, right time, and we got it.”
“A friend of mine a long time ago said that the guys who can get up on the wheel and hustle make their own luck. You can hustle it all night long, and you can still get in a wreck. When it’s your turn to get in a wreck, it’s just your
turn. And we’ve been fortunate,” said Myers. “You take every lap, every corner, every second – just one second at a time - which turns into one lap at a time, which turns into one race at a time.”
Myers’s win strengthened his lead in the points standings for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville finished third to stay right on the heels of Myers.
In the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown held on to the top spot on the points ladder. But it was second-ranked Taylor Branch of Lewisville who took the spotlight on Saturday.
Branch started on the pole for the first Sportsman 20-lapper and tangled with Zack Clifton of Walkertown for the lead. Nearing the end of the race, Clifton bumped Branch out of the way – while Branch spun and fell back in the field.
An enraged Branch made his displeasure known to Clifton, but good luck was on the way for Branch: the “Madhouse Scramble” had him starting third in the second race.
Capitalizing on the good luck, Branch went on to win the second Sportsman race. The wild turn of events helped him to maintain his second place ranking in the points, losing only two points to Stoltz.
In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Amber Lynn of Walkertown continues to sit atop the points ladder. Jeremy Warren of Winston-Salem gained a few points on Lynn on Saturday, but he and Brian Wall of Winston-Salem still
trail by a fair margin.
And in the Law Offices of John Barrow Stadium Stock Series, Chase Hunt of Lexington took victory – extending his points lead. But second-ranked Wesley Thompson of Advance claimed checkered in the other Stadium Stock race on Saturday,
keeping him just ten points behind Hunt.
Be sure to be at the Stadium this Saturday night when Chase Hunt, Wesley Thompson, and the entire field of Stadium Stock cars takes on the Winston-Salem Journal Stadium Stock 50. Plus there will be racing on the agenda for the
Modified, Sportsman, and Street Stock Divisions. And the night will end with the wild thrills of a 109 U-Pull-It Chain Race.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
